Currants And Gooseberries

Interest in growing grapes in the area is on the rise. Home wine making provides the chief impetus for growing grapes. Grapes are of two general types the American and the European, or French Hybrid, grapes. American grapes have largely been developed from American species. They have a slip-skin and are used for juice, jelly, and wine. Most European grapes are table grapes. They may or may not be seedless, and their skin adheres to the flesh. They can also be used for wine making.

Red and white currants

The smooth-skinned, glistening red berries are attractive and ideal for jelly, pies, juice and for wine making. The white currant is a mutation or sport of the red currant and for cultural purposes is treated in exactly the same way. The berries, of somewhat milder flavor than the red, are also useful for jelly and for wine making. Soil and situation Ideally, the soil should be neutral to slightly acid (about pH 6.7). Red and white currants are less tolerant of poor drainage than the black currant but, provided the soil is reasonably well drained and not deficient in potash, they are tolerant of a wide range of conditions.

Jon Rowley Linking Soil and Flavor

Jon not only weighs the amount of vegetables produced. He also checks the brix reading-the level of dissolved plant solids in the juice as measured with a refractometer, a device commonly used in winemaking. High plant sugars mean a higher brix reading, and more distinctive flavors.

Elderberries

Elderberries are popular for their unusual taste in pies, jellies, and jams. They are occasionally used in making wine. The plants are very hardy (usually in areas no colder than Zone 4 but some kinds in Zone 3), and because they flower in late June, the crop is seldom damaged by a late spring frost. They are attractive and easy to grow and are great in landscape plantings. Elderberries contain more phosphorus and potassium than any other temperate fruit crop. The fruits also are rich in vitamin C.
