The soil mix used makes a tremendous difference in seedling growth. A recent study using tomato plants showed that seedlings planted in ordinary potting mix had the least growth in a six week period. Plants grown in perlite and vermiculite did a littie better. Seedlings grown in pure sand grew twice as fast as seedlings grown in potting mix, periite or vermiculite. Plants grown in either Cornell or University of California mix did best In six weeks tomato plants grown in potting mix were barely an inch high.
