There are many techniques that can be used with transplants, and the most important will be discussed in this chapter. Warming the soil electrically can hasten the germination and growth of seeds indoors. Outdoors, coldframes and hotbeds can be used as intermediate stopovers between the indoor seedling bed and the garden—or, as the weather gets warmer, as places where seeds can be eased through the first weeks of life. The techniques of English cloche gardening can be used to protect tender seeds that have been planted directly in the garden soil.
