Green manuring is the process of growing and turning under foliage crops solely for their fertilizing and soil-conditioning values.
Plants with long tap roots tap deep-buried nutrients and trace minerals, break up the soil, and return to earth nutrients that are used in growing.
Plants utilized as green manure include grasses, grains, and legumes, ryegrass and buckwheat These plants generally grow rapidly, producing a lot of organic material quickly. Legumes fix nitrogen—that is, microbes in the soil are attracted to their roots and extract nitrogen and convert it into forms usable by plants. To ensure that nitrogen-fixing microbes are present, it is recommended that you inoculate legume seeds. The inoculant comes in a dark powder and is available from a number of seed firms.
