Fungicides

Chernicai fungicides are effective in preventing and controlling vegetable disease. Because fungicides can be blown or washed off plants, they must be reapplied at regular intervals while the disease is active, The following chemicals are often used in vegetable gardens.

HERBICIDES

Weed killers (herbicides) are not all that useful for the home gardener. Most herbicides are practical only for large-scale agricultural and for single-crop fields. A chemical that is safe for one kind of vegetable may severely injure or destroy another. Weeds can be controlled more effectively in the home garden by a heavy mulch, by cultivating or by hand weeding.

Chemical weed killers can be classified as selective and non-selective—that is, they are selective and attack only one plant or group of plants, or they are non-selective and attack all vegetables.

Some non-selective herbicides are Aminotriazole, Diuron, Monouron, Silvex, 24D and Simazine. These are not for use within the garden. Silvex is found in most herbicides used to control chickweed, bent grass, clover, spurge and similar weeds. It does not harm lawn grass. Octyly Ammonium Methyl Arsonate (AMA) is the universally recommended chemical to kill crabgrass in all stages. Amitrole is recommended for poison ivy, poison oak, clump grass and similar vegetation.

Some selective herbicides are Betasan, Casoran, Chloro IPC, Dachthal, Trifluralin, Eptam and Chloramben. Chloramben can be used around tomatoes and peppers as a pre-emergence weed killer to control weeds and grasses. Dachthal (DCPA) can be used among certain vegetables as a pre-emergence weed control.

A good reference on weed control is the booklet Chemical Weed Control Bulletin 516, from:
