Homemade Cold Frames

Figure 6.09

Figure 6.08 Juwel cold frame

The latest in cold-frames. The gabled roof form permits higher growth and allows the soil to be worked earily by lifting up the window from below. Double-ribbed panels with air chambers store the heat The frame can be limitlessly extended with an extension kit

Figure 6.09

Sauna bath for seeds homemade tunnels of clear plastic stretched over wire create a warm moist greenhouse for sprouting seeds. In the spring, use tunnels to collect solar heat and protect seedlings from cold temperatures and drying winds. Leave the tunnels in place until the weather becomes warm. Close the ends only during cold weather.

photo credit: national Garden Bureau live in northern California as we do, or in northern Colorado, southern Nebraska, central Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania or New Jersey, you're near the 40-degree parallel. So you should slant the top 60 degrees from the horizon. In northern Oregon, southern Minnesota, and northern Wisconsin through central Maine, you will need to slant the top 65 degrees from horizontal.

To construct a cold frame or hotbed, enclose a bed or a portion of it with 2 x 8 or 2 x 10-inch boards, forming a box. The box can sit on the bed frame if it has one, or directly on the ground. Make the cover out of 1 x 3-inch boards glazed with either two layers of windowglass, two layers of polyethylene plastic, or a combination of both. You can also use double-pane recycled windows if you can find a size that fits your bed.

Figure 6.10 Plastic fabric mulches

The newer plastic mulches overcome the disadvantages of conventional plastic sheets. Landscape fabrics come with thousands of tiny funnels molded into the fabric. They gather and channel water to the soil, allowing maximum air and water movement while at the same time blocking out direct light necessary for weed growth. This reduces compaction and water evaporation.

Tomato Gro-Bags increase yields and allow tomatoes to be set out earlier in the spring. The consistent warm, moist atmosphere within the bag fosters more abundant growth while protecting tender plants from driving rains, hail and unexpected late frosts. The perforations are designed to allow proper air circulation and prevent overheating.

Soft plastic used for glazing is lighter and cheaper than glass. Rigid plastic can be more expensive. Most plastics, however, deteriorate rapidly when exposed to the sun and atmosphere. You can fasten polyethylene films and rigid plastics directly to the frame with nails, screws or staples.

In our own area, the winters are so light that we frequently use single glazing for cold frames. In cold winter climates, many expert gardeners build the lid
