Styrene or styrofoam are sometimes used in the form of extruded foam boards as perimeter insulation for greenhouse foundations. There are also urethanes which vary from very hard, rigid materials to elastomers or synthetic rubbers. All have tremendous insulation value. Urethane spray-in-place kits for insulation of foundation walls are now available in hardware and similar stores.

SOLARGREENHOUSE

Solar greenhouses work by gathering warmth and energy from the sun during the day through a south-facing wall and by storing that heat in the (opposite) north wall for use at night and during cloudy days.

Light-gathering wall: The light-gathering wall should be two layers thick with an insulating air space between. You can utilize glass, ultraviolet-resistant fiberglass, or a combination of fiberglass panel outside and polyethylene film inside.

This wall should have a south or near south exposure and should be tilted at any angle equal to your latitude plus 20 to 50 degrees. This will catch the low winter sun but keep out the high summer sun. In summer, when there is too much heat, the greenhouse needs to be shaded and vented. In winter,

especially on extremely cold nights, many solar greenhouse owners use some sort of screen inside the light-gathering wall to slow down the heat loss.

Heat-absorbing wall: Since the sun lies to the south, the greenhouse must utilize a heat-absorbing storage mass at the north wall. This storage mass must be struck directly by sunlight and should be a foot thick or more. It can be constructed of rock, masonry, concrete, adobe or other heat-storing materials. You can also utilize water stored in 50-gallon black-painted drums (the black paint helps absorb heat).

The back of the north wall should be well insulated on the outside so the stored heat won't escape. The north wall can be curved to reflect added light onto the plants and keep them from bending toward the lighter south wall. (You can also store heat in a thick, well-insulated floor.)

Solar greenhouses can retard temperature loss for several days or longer, and the concept has been used successfully in the Pacific Northwest and Minnesota. In colder climates, especially where it may be cloudy for several weeks at a time, a solar greenhouse will need backup heat

One New Mexico solar greenhouse, however, held 52° F during a -2-degree night. A Pacific Northwest greenhouse held above 50° F over a ten-day cloudy period.
