Preparing Soil

Good soil is the essential ingredient for healthy perennials. The ideal soil is moderately acidic with a pH of 5.5 - 6.5. rich in organic material, and drains quickly while retaining moisture. Condition the soil by adding a two- to three-inch layer of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss. Work this material into the top eight to 10 inches of soil with a spade or rotary tiller.

If possible, prepare the soil several weeks before you intend to plant. For proper drainage, keep the planting site a few inches above ground level.
