For a variety of reasons, some individuals in a screening population may remain free of pests or disease. Also known as chance escape, this phenomenon can be very misleading because it is so easily confused with resistance. See also: inoculation, patchy distribution. Disinfection

In a plant protection context, this term means destroying the initial inoculum in order to control the epidemic. Disinfection is undertaken most commonly with contaminated seed and infected seed. But it can also refer to storage containers, with a view to reducing post-harvest losses. Disinfestation
