Incomplete protection

The protection provided by crop protection chemicals is far from complete. As we saw earlier, we are still losing more than 20% of pre-harvest crop production because of parasites, in spite of the massive use of crop protection chemicals costing billions of dollars each year. In food crops alone, this pre-harvest loss is enough to feed about one billion people.

Horizontal resistance also provides an incomplete protection and, in most crops, the maximum possible levels of protection that can be provided by horizontal resistance are still unknown. However, in all the existing examples, listed next, it is probably higher than the overall control achieved with crop protection chemicals.
