Frequency of geneforgene relationships

The system of biological locking is an emergent of the vertical subsystem. Both the nature of alternating parasitism, and the value of a system of locking, strongly suggest that gene-for-gene relationships occur in most alternating pathosystems. However, it must be clearly recognised that a vertical subsystem does not necessarily occur in every alternating host-parasite association. Gene-for-gene relationships have been demonstrated in only a few of them, but this is an area of biology that has been seriously neglected.
