Beans in Mexico

The International Development & Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada financed a Canada-Mexico co-operative teaching and research project at Colegio de Postgraduados in Montecillos, Mexico. At the end of the third breeding cycle, working with black beans, and using late selection, Mexican scientists had obtained genetic advances of 18% in each of the first three breeding cycles, without any use of protection chemicals (Garcia Espinosa, et al, 2001). Unfortunately, in 1998, IDRC decided to stop funding this very promising project.
