The plant gave anthraquinone derivatives. The root gave alizarin, ru-bichloric acid and ruberythric acid, also anthraquinones. Purpurin, pupur-oxanthin carboxylic acid, present in Madder (Rubia tinctorum), are almost entirely absent.
