What Can I Plant on a Steep Bank to Prevent Erosion

To keep "steep" dirt from washing away, you want something fast-growing with grabbing roots to stabilize the soil. Ideally, you also want something that'll last a while, spread out, and cause you little trouble. If the plant excludes weeds by forming a mat, better still. Plants that meet this tall order include bearberry, creeping juniper, pachysandra, cotoneaster, and shrub roses. Daylilies also work well because they have fingerlike roots that really grab on. You can also look into having the slope terraced and planting each step or level. Or install a rock garden — the rocks may help hold the soil in place (besides, rock-garden plants like quick-draining ground, and slopes fit the bill).
