Preparing your soil

Annual flowers grow rapidly from seedling to mature flowering plant in just a few short weeks, so they need plenty of good nutrition. Perennials and bulbs, too, need to put down roots and develop leafy tops to make food for their roots, which live from one year to the next. Adequate soil fertility, moisture, and organic matter keep your flowers growing robustly, producing more and larger blooms, and fending off pests and diseases.

When you're done preparing your soil, make a list of plant combinations that suit your site; then boldly go forth to make your selections. For information on choosing the healthiest specimens and proper planting techniques, refer to Chapter 12.
