She makes an on-site compost pile that not only provides humus for her garden but smothers weeds as well. Choosing a site where weeds are growing makes sense, Carrie says. "If there are weeds growing, that's a good place for a garden.' She lets her on-site compost cook for several months, noting that the hotter the weather, the quicker it will break down.
