Meet Two Rising Stars

Our first year's subscription to KG was invaluable for us as it coincided with acquiring a new allotment, which led us to some success at local shows.

So, how about some more features on local clubs and societies?

The Hayling Island Horticultural Society was founded in 1886 and is still growing strong, with events and outings, three shows a year and a trading centre.

My children, Lizzie (aged 10) and Joe (aged nine) have had a great year being involved with this society. The highlights for Lizzie were cups 'for gaining most points in the open classes for all shows' and 'for gaining most points in the junior exhibitors' classes in all shows,' and Joe was rewarded for having the heaviest

potatoes grown in a basket.

The junior classes at HIHS shows include art, craft, cooking and, of course, growing things, all-in-all a great way to get children involved. Tim Speller, Hayling Island, Hampshire Steve says: Regular readers will have seen our campaign, in association with the Allotment Gardens Trust, to find Britain's best allotment site and the entries have

been coming in thick and fast.

If you missed it, look out for the entry form, which will be repeated in our May issue.
