Preparation And Cooking

Jerusalem artichokes have a very mild flavour reminiscent of water chestnuts and can be cooked like potatoes i.e. boiled, fried or baked, while fresh ones can also be added to salads. I have found that the best way to clean them is to use an old toothbrush, and also, don't bother peeling your tubers as the skin will easily rub off after they have been boiled. Just like potatoes, Jerusalem artichoke plants store carbohydrate in their tubers, but unlike potatoes, it is in the form of inulin...

Power To The People

I wrote to Kitchen Garden (KG October 2005) outlining our battle with Brighton and Hove City Council re our allotment site at Horsdean, Patcham. The council had planned to build a 1400-car park-and-ride on our well-used Downland site, which has a large waiting list and no derelict plots. Edwin Oxlade wrote a perceptive article in the same issue of the magazine entitled, Hang On To Your Plot, he also mentioned our plight in his feature, And The Mayor Came Too (KG December 2005). We decided to...

Cultivators V Rakes

The four cultivator tools produced mixed reactions. Most testers liked using the three-pronged cultivators, finding them both excellent for breaking up clods, while being light to handle and good in confined spaces where a rake would not go. The stainless steel head of the Draper was very popular and others liked the overall balance of the Spear and Jackson. However, none of these cultivators could do all the work of a good rake - levelling and removing lumps were impossible tasks - so although...

As ever my task along with my sturdy troupe of voluntary testers was to try and find out if all rakes are equal or whether by dint of construction or design work, some are more effective tools than others. As well as the standard garden rakes, there are a number of other manual tools that are intended for soil preparation, so I took the opportunity to take a look at a couple of three-pronged cultivators and two of the more elaborate 'tiller' devices. Having said wet soils are not ideal, season...

Sorting Out The Seed Catalogue Jargon

Often when you read the various seed catalogues some of the terms look a little confusing. The catalogues use words like First Early, Second Early, Maincrop, Late Main crop, Mangetout, Sugar snaps, Wrinkled- or Round-seeded peas. What does it all mean In simple language it means that you can start the season sowing a first early variety, followed by the others in sequence, ending with a late maincrop, so you get a continuous supply of peas. Mangetout and sugar snap peas are varieties that are...

Seed Tape Update

Regular readers might remember my letter in the April 2004 issue of KG page 18 in which I explained how I make my own seed tapes, at the time using rice paper and PVA string of the type available from fishing tackle shops. Seed tapes make sowing easy and keep the seeds at the right depth in the soil. They also reduce the need for thinning and so reduce root disturbance. I have had great success with this method when growing spring onions, radish and leeks, but pansies were a failure. At the...

Sweep The Board With Broad Beans

A couple of rows of broad beans are a common sight on most kitchen gardeners' vegetable plots. Although often seen growing on plots, are they in the correct condition for picking and showing The broad bean classes at most summer shows are well supported, but often I have seen some very long pods full of beans displayed neatly on the show bench which, when opened, are clearly past their prime. It is no good trying to exhibit pods that are old and tough with black-eyed beans inside your beans...

Plant Lettuce

1 Remove each lettuce from its cell or pot and plant along a 2cm 1in drill made with a hoe. Be careful not to bury the plants too deep as they can rot. A good guide is to bury them up to the line of compost in their growing cell, but no higher 2 Water well to help their roots establish quickly. These are 'Little Gem'. To protect them from the attentions of pigeons and also April showers or icy winds, cover the young plants with cloches or modules to give them enough space to grow on to be ready...

Sniff Out Banana Shallots

Appeal for banana shallots KG March 2006 . I recently came across some in the fruit and vegetable section of a Waitrose supermarket in Billericay, Essex, though whether they will run straight to seed will only become apparent this coming season. It would seem that they are available if you hunt around enough, although they are not yet in seed catalogues. P J Hood, Basildon, Essex I have a...

What To Look For In The Catalogues

The modern FI hybrid courgettes are the most likely to give high yields from compact plants, and hence are good for small gardens. Varieties such as 'El Greco', 'Venus', 'Elite' have all done well in this respect in recent trials. They are bred for the sort of fruit you see on the supermarket shelves -uniformly smooth, cylindrical and dark green - and for open, bushy plants which make harvesting easy. Some varieties such as 'Kojac' also have less spiny leaves than the norm, which you will...

How To Use Weedkillers

Patios Ideas

Weedkillers are not cheap and to get the very best from them, they need to be used at the right time and in the right way. Here are a few tips Apply on a bright day when no rain is expected for at least six hours. This gives the product time to dry and to be absorbed by the leaves of the weeds. Apply sparingly. Contact weedkillers and the most popular systemic weedkiller on the market - glyphosate - are absorbed mainly if not entirely by the foliage. Apply too much and it simply rolls off onto...

Little Indian Incubator

How you then proceed with the care of your broody during the incubation and subsequent rearing of her babies you'll just have to wait until next month's article to find out. When we visited India last November we took a few bantam eggs out with us, as a gift for our hotel owner's wife. A broody hen had been pre-arranged and she arrived, in a carrier bag at our bedroom door. Despite this inauspicious start, when settled on the eggs, in a basket they use especially for this purpose, she sat like...

Build A Broody Coup

On the contrary, if you decide to have some fun and use her as a broody hen a completely different treatment is required. First, you will need to organise somewhere special to house her, alone from the rest of the flock, as a broody left to sit with other hens is always a disaster. A proper broody coup a special little house and run is great, but a tea chest on its side, with a removable front and a secure run is fine. Position this in a shady, secluded area and take a 30cm 12in cardboard box,...
