Essential Oils Guide
The characteristic properties of many herbs and spices are largely due to the presence of essential oils, which arc volatile substances that contribute to the aroma (or the essence) of certain plants. Chemically, these oils arc classified as tcrpencs, which arc unsaturated hydrocarbons with the common building block of C 0H16. Essential oils impart flavor to foods in addition, many have medicinal properties. Some essential oils reportedly function as antibiotics, decongestants, stimulants, or pain relievers. Essential oils can be found in various plant organs, but they typically occur in leaves, flowers, or fruits. For commercial applications, the essential oils arc cxtractcd by several methods, including steam distillation, expression, and solvent extraction. They may then be used in processed foods and in rnanuiacturing cosmetics, soaps, and candlcs. The recent interest in aromatherapy has greadv increased the use of essential oils, and they can now easily be purchased in many...
For many of the leafy herbs, the essential oils arc conccntratcd in glandular trichomcs on the leaf surface. Select leaves from the herbs being grown by the class and examine them with the dissecting microscope. You should be able to see the glandular trichomcs. Which surface i upper or lower) has the most trichomcs In the following space, draw several of these trichomcs. 3. Several essential oils arc available in class. These are in small bottles labeled A through E. Placc a drop of each essential oil on a separate piece of blotting paper. Smell the aroma. Identify the sourcc of each essential oil. You may need to go back and reexamine the herbs and spiccs available in lab. Record your answer in table 2 of worksheet 14-1.
Note It's easy to cnhance the healing properties of this pillow with herbs. Just drop a small herb sachet into the outer pillow case along with the grain sack. Remove the herbs when heating or chilling the pillow. I don't add the herbs to the grain sack because they'll need to be refreshed long before the pillow wears out, explains Alison. 1 And I don't use essential oils, as the scent will remain in the pillow for longer than you may like.' By the way, the rice smells wonderful when it's heated.
Flowers wind carries the pollen for other plants. Animal-pollinated plants usually have large, showy flowers. The petals arc brightly colored, and essential oils impart scents ro attract the pollinator. These flowers often produce nectar, which is a reward for the animal. Pollen in the flowers is usually large, heavy, and sticky. By contrast, wind pollinated flowers tend to be small and inconspicuous. They are often formed in an inflorescence and lack petals. Wind-pollinated flowers produce copious amounts of small, lightweight pollen.
Stem bark and roots yielded an alkaloid liriodenine. Root bark yielded sesquiterpene lactones (including parthenolide and micheliolide). Leaves gave a polyisoprenoid, beta-sitosterol and liriodenine. Mono-and sesquiter-penes occur in essential oils isolated from the flowers, leaf and fruit ring.
Essential oils can be extracted from herbs with a simple distillation apparatus. Use about 20 to 25 herb leaves with a small amount of water. When heated, the essential oil will evaporate along with water vapor. Because die oil is lighter than water, it will float on the water, and it may be possible to separate the two layers. It takes sophisticated equipment to make essential oils, which are highly concentrated, pure plant distillates extracted from various parts of plants. Also, a huge volume of plant material is required to make even a small amount of pure oil, so it's nearly impossible to make essential oils at home. However, you can buy herbal oils at herb shops and pharmacies. When shopping for essential oils, look for pure essential oils packaged in dark-colored bottles. Synthetic oils, although far less expensive, cannot be safely or effectively used in therapeutic recipes. Due to variations in the oil content of various plants, you'll find a wide range in the cost of essential oils Pure rose oil, for example, costs 45 for ounce, whereas the same amount of lavender oil costs 5. Essential oils are almost always intended for external use. In addition, most essential oils are too strong to use directly on the skin,- they must lirst be mixed into an oil or cream. Several alternative solutions to Varroa control have been studied in Europe. They include lactic acid, oxalic acid, thymol, essential oils, neem oil, and several bio-technical measures. These control measures are discussed in the Swiss Bee Research Center website publication at . However, according to Blane White, Aviary Inspector in Minnesota, lactic acid and oxalic acid have not been tested in the United States and are not approved treatments. He also comments that thymol has had limited testing in the United States, and that it does work under some conditions. However, there are no approved thymol treatments in the U.S. at present (White, no date). Using essential oils to kill both kinds of mites has been researched. One of the problems with using essential oils is that many of the compounds are toxic to honey bees as well as mites. Several herbal extracts and essential oils have been tested. Essential oils This term means 'essence' rather than indispensable. Essential oils are obtained from a wide variety of plants, and the oil is extracted either by distillation or by solvents, which are then evaporated off and re-used. Most essential oils are used in the perfume industry but a few have medicinal uses. Many of them offer scope for amateur breeders who, however, should be aware of the very limited markets that are easily saturated. Ethrel
Grocery distributors depend heavily on wholesale sources for herbs. Food manufacturers rely on intermediate products such as essential oils, herb pastes and essences, and herb blends to season consumer products. Upscale urban restaurants meet their needs for the Mediterranean herbs (thyme, marjoram, summer savory, French tarragon, Greek oregano) from terminal markets, though they sometimes find the quality of local organic herbs very attractive. Oranges and lemons, the bells of St Clements . Citrus fruits are among the oldest, originating mainly in S.E. Asia, and having spread throughout the Old World in antiquity. They are some of the most popular fruits, usually eaten fresh, but also made into special jams known as marmalade. They are a major source of Vitamin C. Citrus spp., are members of the botanical family Rutaceae. Most citrus trees are grafted on to stocks that are resistant to various root rots, but graft incompatibilities can lead to secondary problems, such as stem-pitting due to the tristeza virus. Citrus fruits become orange or yellow when ripe but, in the tropics, they may remain green. Many citrus species produce nucellar (i.e., parthenocarpic) seeds. The rind of most citrus fruits contains essential oils that are used in a wide range of perfumes, soaps, and foods.
One of the most recognized and popular scents for cosmetics, toiletries, and aromatherapy, lavender (Lavandula) also adds drama to your flower garden. Several species exist, all of which have needlelike foliage and spikes of purplish blue flowers. The English lavender varieties, such as purple Hidcote and Munstead, grow up to 24 inches high and are hardy through Zone 5. Pink-flowering varieties include Hidcote Pink and Miss Katherine. Other species are less hardy but equally appealing, including spike, French, and fringed lavenders.
Many herbs are native to the eroded hillsides around the Mediterranean, so it's not surprising that they like lean, well-drained soil. You don't have to give herbs a starvation diet, though, to get good results. Ordinary garden soil with average fertility is fine if you leave off the fertilizer. Lots of nitrogen produces lush-looking herb leaves, but it reduces the concentration of the essential oils that give herbs their aroma and flavor (and some of their medicinal properties).
